Elder Lassie??? 8/27/2019

My district leader (leader of a small group of missionaries) is Elder L (pronounced Lassiter like Psych) and he has us call him Elder Lassie which is great.

I had a lovely 4am wake up on wednesday to get to my flight. I got through to my gate without problem (take that Evan) and hung out there for a while. While I waited, I started talking to this guy who was like "Are you leaving on your mission?" I was like "yup" and we chatted and he told me how Delta boarding works because I had never gone on Delta before. He was in Baltimore for work. The flight was uneventful which is nice and Emma met me at the baggage claim and picked me up. Then we went to her room and picked up my suit and her husband (who apparently didn't like me enough to come pick me up :P) and we went to eat. I had an amazing steak bbq and onion sandwich and then we went to Brewster's and got some ice cream. After a nap, we went and they dropped me off at the MTC (missionary training center).

I got there at about 2:30 and some missionaries helped me with my bag and we went and got my name tags, key to my dorm, and my ID and rushed me off to drop my bags off in my dorm to go to a welcome meeting. The meeting started at 3pm and I got there at about 3:30ish and missed a large chunk of it. Oh well. I also missed the time where you met you companion (person who you are with pretty much all day all the time) so I had a temporary one. Eventually we went to the room where we have most of our classes and I finally met my companion for the next 3 weeks.

His name is Elder S and he is from Mesa, Arizona. He is really funny and is a beast at spike ball (more on that later). During on of our meetings, we were singing "The Army of Helaman" and they had changed the words "we will be the Lord's missionaries" to "we are now the Lord's missionaries" and when we were singing that, I teared up and I felt the spirit super strong telling me that this is where I am supposed to be.
In my district, we have 14 people (6 Elders and 8 Sisters) in our district (see picture below).

Thursday we were apparently supposed to have a service project at 6:30am but we weren't told anything about it until 7:20 and it ended at 7:40 so we were able to do a grand total of 15min of service because of 5min of instructions. We were able to plan a lesson for R who was one of the teachers impersonating one of the people he taught. The lesson went really well despite us not getting through everything (it was a 10min lesson) but Elder S and I did so well that he didn't have any issues with it and just a single suggestion. We were brought back down to earth by having a lesson with a real person on Monday thought.

Sunday was very interesting as we had about 7 or 8 meetings with meals sprinkled in between them. Over the course of those meetings, I am not ashamed to admit to crying at least 3 times from the powerful spirit that I felt. Normally I would have died during that many meetings but the member of the branch (group of districts) presidency who spoke was amazing and he lead some of the other meetings. When he was talking, I felt like I was in General Conference listening to an Apostle. I went to MTC choir which was amazing. Imagine having 1700 men and 300 women in the choir. It felt like an army which was appropriate as we sang Hope of Israel which talks about being in an army fighting against sin and the devil. The director was super funny and I had an all around great time. Then we were able to watch The Character of Christ. Those of you who have seen it know what I mean when I say I can't really describe it. It was a super powerful speech given by Elder David A Bednar and it was amazing.

On Monday we had more classes and taught Emma (not my sister) who is learning about the church. She is an amazing person that is such fun to talk to (we used 15 of our 25min lesson just chatting with her about random things). The lesson went okay but I definetly felt like I was rambling and also completely lost track of time. Thankfully Elder S saved me and we were able to finish off with a prayer and an invitation to pray by herself. We are going to teach her again on Wednesday.

] he still will love us." - Elder O

See you on Tuesday John!
